In dit programma gaat schrijver/journalist Chris Keulemans in gesprek met twee auteurs die we kunnen zien als vertegenwoordigers van Arabisch-Europese literatuur: Hassan Blasim en Rasha Hilwi. Ze leven en werken in Europa maar wat betreft hun onderwerpen en taal zijn ze nauw verbonden met de Arabische wereld. Hisham Hamad doet bij de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen onderzoek naar de literaire relaties tussen West-Europa en het Arabische Midden-Oosten.
Het gesprek zal gaan over hoe verzet en subversiviteit in hun werk vorm krijgen. En hoe wij, als Nederlandse (of: Europese) lezer zonder Arabische roots, dit kunnen verstaan. Van een boek als De brave soldaat Svejk van Josef Hasek kunnen ‘wij’ vrij goed de onderliggende – maar nergens expliciet uitgesproken – anti-oorlogsboodschap aanvoelen. Hoe is dat met literatuur met wortels in de Arabische cultuur? Hoeveel missen we bijvoorbeeld als we de verhalenbundel Lijkententoonstelling van Hassan Blasim lezen, die door H.M. van den Brink wordt omschreven als “komisch en wreed, te absurd voor woorden en tegelijkertijd doodnormaal”.
Verdere vragen die aan de orde zullen komen: welke lezers heb je voor ogen? Welke subversieve schrijvers inspireren je? Waartegen verzet jouw schrijven zich? En bestaat er inderdaad zoiets als Arabisch-Europese literatuur?
De auteurs zullen tijdens het gesprek hun eigen werk en dat van hun inspiratiebronnen presenteren.
Hassan Blasim is geboren in Irak en woont sinds zijn vlucht uit dat land in Finland. Hij schrijft in het Arabisch en zijn werk is verschenen in onder andere het Engels, Nederlands en Fins. Zijn meest recente publicatie is Sololand (Comma Press, 2025) en bevat drie novelles in Engelse vertaling. In Nederland verschenen Allah 99 en Lijkententoonstelling bij uitgeverij Jurgen Maas. The Guardian noemt hem: “Perhaps the best writer of Arabic fiction alive”.
Rasha Hilwi is Palestijnse en kwam via Berlijn in Amsterdam terecht. Ze is onder andere schrijver, journalist, DJ, storyteller en cultureel activist. Ze is specialiste op het gebied van Palestijnse poëzie. Onlangs maakte ze met Sahand Sahebdivani de voorstelling ‘A trail of pomegranateseeds’.
Hisham Hamad bestudeert vanuit een gecombineerde studie Talen en culturen van het Midden-Oosten (Arabisch) en Vertaalwetenschap de literaire, ideologische en ideationele uitwisselingen tussen West-Europa en het Arabische Midden-Oosten. Daarnaast de moderne Arabische literatuur, literaire vertalingen en vertaalgeschiedenis en -conventies in het Midden-Oosten. Als vertaler werkte hij mee aan de Nederlandse vertaling van Hassan Blasims ‘Lijkententoonstelling’.
Chris Keulemans is schrijver, journalist en voormalig directeur van de Balie en de Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam. Van zijn hand verscheen onder andere Verzet, over de strijders, de denkers, de slachtoffers en de leiders die hij op zijn reizen ontmoette. Vlak na Het Grote Gebeuren verschijnt zijn nieuwe boek Vriendschap.

PLAYING WITH FIRE – Resistance in Arab-European Literature
In this event, writer and journalist Chris Keulemans will be speaking with two authors representing Arab-European literature: Hassan Blasim and Rasha Hilwi. Both live and work in Europe, but they are closely connected to the Arab world through their themes and language. Hisham Hamad researches literary relationships between Western Europe and the Middle East at the University of Groningen.
The conversation will cover how resistance and subversiveness finds its roots in their work, and how we, as European readers without Arab roots, can understand this. From a book like De Brave Soldaat Švejk (The Good Soldier Švejk) by Josef Hasek, we can feel the underlying – but nowhere explicitly stated – anti-war sentiment, but can we same the same about literature grounded in Arab culture? How much do we miss when we read Lijkententoonstelling (The Corpse Exhibition) by Hassan Blasim, described by H.M. van den Brink as “comical and cruel, too absurd for words and yet normal at the same time.”
Further questions that will come up during this event: who do you picture your readers to be? What subversive writers inspire you? What is it that your writing aims to resist? Is there indeed such a thing as Arab-European literature?
During this conversation, the authors will be presenting their work alongside the work of their inspirations.
Hassan Blasim was born in Iraq and has been living in Finland ever since fleeing his country. There he writes in Arabic and his work has appeared in among other languages English, Dutch and Finnish. His most recent publication is Sololand (Comma Press, 2025) and contains three novellas in their English translation. In the Netherlands, Allah 99 and Lijkententoonstelling were published by Jurgen Maas. The Guardian describes him as “perhaps the best writer of Arabic fiction alive.”
Rasha Hilwi is from Palestine and ended up in Amsterdam via Berlin. She is a writer, journalist, DJ, storyeteller, cultural activist and more. She specialises in the field of Palestinian poetry. Recently she and Sahand Sahebdivani cocreated the stage production “A trail of pomegranate seeds”.
Hisham Hamad researches literary and ideological exchanges between Western Europe and the Middle East through a combined study of Language & Culture of the Middle East (Arabic) and Translation Studies. Alongside this he also researches modern Arab literature, literary translations, and translation history and conventions in the Middle East. As a translator he also worked on the Dutch translation of Hassan Blasim’s Lijkententoonstelling (The Corpse Exhibition).
Chris Keulemans is a writer, journalist and former director of both de Balie and Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam. Among his works is the book Verzet (Resistance), about the fighters, the thinkers, the victims, and the leaders that he met on his journeys. Shortly after Het Grote Gebeuren, his new book will be released titled Vriendschap (Friendship).
