PERFORMER DESCRIPTIONS
Lionel
Lionel Newman is a Thai-American poet and neuroscientist who lived in forest monasteries and briefly ordained as a Buddhist monk in Thailand. In 2020 he was selected to perform in Groningen at the “Dichters in de Prinsentuin” poetry festival, in 2019 he toured with Random Collision Dance Company performing improvised poetry, and in 2008 won Editor’s Choice for creative nonfiction in Towers Literary Magazine. He is currently pursuing a PhD in neuroscience at the University of Groningen.
Jeffrey
Jeffrey Pattiwael, also known as Mister Numz was born and raised in Groniningen. Rapper, radio host at Break North Radio, spoken word artist and has his own radio show Raidio Melanesian Sounds on OogRadiol aka multi-talented. He is also a political activist and through the above talents is committed to the freedom of his people and country. He also works with the label ‘NusaLoudness’ to mentor talented younger artists within the music world. Currently, Mister Numz is putting the finishing touches on his Hip Hop solo album.
Cecile
Cecile Bol was born and raised in Groningen, but happens to write poetry in English. By day, she earns her living as a self-employed copywriter. Her debut poetry book ‘Fold me a Fishtail’ was published in the UK in 2022. The somewhat well-known poet Helen Ivory describes Cecile’s work as ‘like finding snakes in your strawberry patch’. Cecile enjoys incorporating fairy tales and popular culture in her poetry, and her poems often have a slight erotic edge. Cecile leads a local English poetry group, the Groningen Poetry Stanza.
Nikki
Nikki is a 29 year old person who grew up in the US. She has lived in the Netherlands for several years and is currently living in Groningen where she is a full time petsitter and part time model for art classes. Nikki has been writing poetry for several years, with one past publication. She has also performed her poetry in front of an audience a few times when she was studying in Amsterdam. Alongside writing poetry, her other hobbies include cooking, smiling at dogs on the street, and enjoying sunsets.
Emma
Emma Charlot (27) is a city dweller at heart. One day she would like to buy a farm in the countryside and surround herself with animals and children, but until then she will stay in Groningen. She works in youth care and has her own business in the cultural sector. She writes customized texts, performs regularly and enjoys being in front of the classroom. Emma has collaborated on projects such as “Development Law” and “Bittersweet Heritage. She has also performed on several stages, including ‘Mondig op Maandag’ in Utrecht, Internatial Womansdag in TSH, Dichters in de Prinsentuin, the Jonge Festival, Noorderzon & the Groningse Museumnacht. When Emma was young she was already writing poetry, often small poems designed with colorful drawings. She still writes, although these days they are more socially informed texts. In her texts, fantasy and reality shake hands.
