Daphne du Maurier wrote this gothic novel in 1938. The story depicts an unnamed young woman who impetuously marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, Rebecca. In her writing, Daphne du Maurier seems to have been inspired by this other famous literary classic, Charlotte Brönte’s Jane Eyre. So if you enjoyed that book, this book – and book club – might be just the thing for you.
Our bookseller Hester: “I’ve read this novel three times now and every time I read it, it captivates me from its first and famous opening sentence! I can’t wait to chat about this wonderful book Rebecca, which is Daphne du Maurier’s most famous classic.”
